A BIOPAMA Rapid Response Grant

The Laikipia Forum is pleased to announce the inception of the Mukogodo Forest Support Project, part of a series of Rapid Response Grants in partnership with the BIOPAMA (Biodiversity and Protected Areas Management), which is supported by the European Union and the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States.

The € 50,000 Mukogodo Forest Support grant enhances communication, security and wildlife/habitat monitoring in the Mukogodo Forest Reserve in the face of the COVID pandemic. It is implemented by the ILMAMUSI Mukogodo Forest Association with the support of the Forum and LEWA Wildlife Conservancy for a period of 12 months beginning February 2021 to January 2022.

The overall objective of this Project is to ensure that the Association’s rangers can engage effectively in security and conservation measures in the Forest. The Project allows them to join the radio network of security forces in the landscape and provides the means for them to join the wildlife monitoring efforts as well.

The Biodiversity and Protected Areas Management (BIOPAMA) programme aims to improve the long-term conservation and sustainable use of natural resources in African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries, in protected areas and surrounding communities. It is an initiative of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States financed by the European Union’s 11th European Development Fund (EDF), jointly implemented by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission (JRC). Building on the first five years of activities financed by the 10th EDF (2012-2017), BIOPAMA’s second phase provides tools for data and information management, services for improving the knowledge and capacity for protected area planning and decision making, and funding opportunities for specific site-based actions. www.biopama.
