Earlier this year, we were able to experience, firsthand, the remarkable Il Ngwesi Lodge. You can read more about our experience by clicking here.
Apart from experiencing their exciting (and diverse offerings), we also learned about Il Ngwesi’s commitment to positively impacting the surrounding community.
Il Ngwesi contributes to developing local communities by supporting education, health, and livelihood projects.
Recently, Il Ngwesi were doing their bursary cheque presentations at various schools. We were able to catch up with them and learn more about how they are supporting education in the Il Ngwesi community.
The Il Ngwesi bursary targets high school, college, and University students who are members of the Il Ngwesi neighborhoods. (Although occasionally, special consideration can be made for those not part of the Il Ngwesi neighborhoods).
The amount of support in the form of the bursary is dependent on lodge profits. The profits generated by the lodge are divided by the number of students in the neighborhood-This means that the bursary amount is distributed equitably.
Apart from the lodge profits, sometimes guests can also chip in to support these students.
Il Ngwesi also supports education in other ways, and these include;
- Roads repair – which consequently makes schools accessible
- Feeding programs ensure that the school-going children can have something to eat, even as they study.
- If there is a shortage of teachers, Il Ngwesi have also taken up teachers’ salaries to ensure that they’re enough teachers.
Beneficiaries of the Il Ngwesi bursaries have become successful actors in the Il Ngwesi community and the Laikipia landscape as a whole. The current Il Ngwesi chair, Kip Ole Polos, was a bursary recipient. Lestan Kimiri, the Ilmamusi CFA manager, is also another beneficiary. Many others have secured jobs with various conservation and tourism actors in the greater Laikipia landscape.
You can support this and other Il Ngwesi initiatives by visiting the stunning facility. If you are not in a position to visit but would still like to contribute, you can reach out to info@ilngwesi.com, and they will guide you appropriately.
