What We Do

Laikipia Wildlife Forum recognizes the importance of water resources for both people and wildlife in the Laikipia landscape and works to promote sustainable water management practices that ensure the long-term health and availability of water resources. The LWF’s water program focuses on integrated water resources management which involves managing water resources in a way that balances social, economic, and environmental needs.

The water program involves working with a range of stakeholders including CFAS, WRUAs, county governments, national government agencies, researchers, and civil society groups (CSOs) and other water actors to identify and address critical water issues in the Upper Ewaso Ng’iro North Catchment Area (UENNCA).

LWF closely partners with the Mt. Kenya-Ewaso Water Partnership (MKEWP), a public-private partnership formed address critical water issues in the UENNCA catchment. Through these initiatives, we aim to ensure that water resources in the Laikipia landscape are managed for sustainable, equitable, social, and economic development in harmony with natural water systems and environmental cycles.

Tourism is one of the key areas of operation and thematic areas of LWF. We have been involved in ecotourism marketing promotion and guided community tourism investments for over a decade

LWF’s tourism area of operation focuses on promoting sustainable tourism in the county which includes ecotourism, adventure tourism and Meetings Incentives Conferences and Exhibitions tourism.

LWF aims to support tourism development that benefits the local communities and the environment. Through its work in tourism LWF seeks to create employment and business opportunities, promote conservation education, and encourage the preservation of natural and cultural heritage in Laikipia.

It is in the pursuit for this that LWF established the Laikipia Tourism Association that brings together the hospitality industry (tourism operators/ destinations) in Laikipia for increased collaboration and influence the direction and contributions of the tourism sector in the greater Laikipia region for landscape development and management.

Rangelands are a vital resource in Laikipia providing habitat for wildlife, grazing land for livestock, and important ecosystem services such as water filtration and soil conservation. We recognize the importance of sustainable rangeland management in supporting the long-term health of these critical ecosystems.

LWF’s rangeland management program works to promote sustainable rangeland management
practices including grazing management, fire management, and restoration of degraded rangelands.

We as well work to promote the integration of rangeland management objectives into land use planning processes and to facilitate collaboration and cooperation among different stakeholders involved in rangeland management.

By promoting sustainable rangeland management, we aim to support the long-term health of rangeland ecosystems while also supporting the livelihoods of local communities that depend on them.

We aim to promote conservation education in the local communities of Laikipia and beyond as a means of creating awareness, understanding and appreciating the natural xenvironment. LWF’s conservation education program targets schools, community groups, and the general public. The program includes a range of activities such as sensitization and awareness creation, school visits, wildlife excursions and educational campaigns.

Through its conservation education efforts, the LWF seeks to foster a culture of conservation and sustainability, thereby promoting conservation of wildlife, rangelands, water and other natural resources.

The LWF’s conservation education program seeks to promote a holistic approach to conservation that integrates social, economic, and environmental considerations. Through our work in conservation education, we aim to encourage individuals and communities to take ownership of conservation and to develop their own solutions to conservation challenges. Ultimately LWF hopes to create a culture of conservation and sustainability that will support the long-term protection and management of natural resources in Laikipia and beyond.

LWF recognizes that land use is a critical factor in the sustainable management of natural resources in Laikipia and the wider region. We work towards promoting land use practices that are compatible with conservation and sustainable development objectives.

Through this program we seek to promote sustainable land use practices including conservation agriculture, sustainable forestry and the sustainable use of rangelands. We as well work to provide technical support training and capacity building to land users including; farmers, ranchers and pastoralists to help them adopt more sustainable land use practices.

LWF recognizes that land use is closely linked to other thematic areas including water, wildlife and conservation education and works to promote integrated approaches to natural resource management. By promoting sustainable land use practices, we aim to support the long-term health and well-being of the natural environment and the communities that depend on it.
