On November 24, 1920, the Governor of the Colony of Kenya declared Nanyuki a Township drawing the powers from the East Africa Township Ordinance of 1903.
This declaration read. “In the exercise of the powers conferred upon me, I, the Governor of the Colony of Kenya and East Africa Protectorate, hereby declare the area described in the schedule hereto to be a Township for the purposes of the East Africa Townships Ordinance, 1903 and to be named, Nanyuki.”
On 24th November this year, Nanyuki residents celebrated the towns 100 years of existence. The day provided the County, the town’s leadership and its residents an opportunity to reflect on the strides the town has made over the last century.
The Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Laikipia Chapter, with its partners had organized the Laikipia Business Awards at the Nanyuki@100 breakfast at Swara Ranch, Maiyan Development, Nanyuki.

The event celebrated outstanding organizations and individuals doing great things for our landscape and among those awarded for their work in various categories include:
- Best Business Advocacy Association– Laikipia County Development Authority
- Best Women in Business- Grace Wanjiku Mugare (BIOHAZARD WASTE SOLUTION EA LTD)
- Most Innovative business year 2020- Mr Mathu (St. Christopher’s School)
- Outstanding Community service Award- Purity Gitonga
- Customer Focus Award- Ndegwa Gitonga (Sports Man’s Arms Hotel)
Francis Githui of the Storm Water and Environment Management Forum (SWEMF), who the Laikipia Forum and Mount Kenya Ewaso Water Partnership have supported and worked with over the last few years, also received an award for his outstanding efforts in environmental conservation and management.

Many of the speakers reiterated how the town had made significant progress over the years and this can be attributed to the growth of the tourism industry, which has consequently led to the growth in other businesses in the town.
Later that evening, the Laikipia County Development Authority (LCDA) hosted a cocktail party at Cedar Mall.

Governor Ndiritu Muriithi emphasized how the future was bright for Nanyuki town and stated his intentions to have Nanyuki gazetted as a municipality before the Jamhuri Day celebration on 12th December 2020. He added that this would be a great step in the town and would be beneficial to various sectors especially our real estate sector.
The future looks bright for our town. The #Laikipia Tourism Association is committed to helping tourism establishments within our town and the greater Laikipia landscape to grow and become a top sustainable tourism destination in East Africa.
