The Participatory Forest Management Plan (PFMP) for Mukogodo National Forest Reserve expired in 2018. A new PFMP is required as the basis for a 5 – year Management Agreement between the ILMAMUSI CFA with the Kenya Forest Service (KFS). This Agreement will guide the implementation of CFA activities and programs within Mukogodo forest for a period of five years.
As the first activity in the PFMP, the CFA organized inception meetings, together with KFS, to formally launch the PFMP review process on 11th and 12th January 2022 at Loiragai and Kiwanja Ndege respectively.
The Integrated Forestry Conservation & Management Services Ltd (IFCMS) facilitated the discussion on the overview of the PFMP review process. They gave a detailed explanation of all the stages and the KFS guidelines on the process.
The steps include adding to the identification of Forest resources and assessing their status, confirmation of the scope and scale of community dependency on the Forest, identify the requirements for Forest management against the capacity of the CFA management, and review the scope and scale of activities within the Forest. With this information, the team will then prepares the PFMP, develops and signs Management Agreement (defining User rights), implement PFMP, and then monitors performance against the Plan and the Agreement before embarking on another PFMP Review, 5 years later.
The consultant explained the criteria for selecting a Local Plan Review Team (LPRT) and qualifications for one to be a member of the LPRT. The qualifications are a person who is able to read and write, is knowledgeable of the forest resources, available when needed, a good communicator, sociable and likeable, be non – partisan and be a member of the CFA.
The KFS Ecosystem Conservator officially launched the PFMP Review process. He then urged the Consultant and the CFA members to pass the message to the rest of the communities and stakeholders through all other available forums, which should include social media, public barazas. Stakeholders present in this meeting selected twelve members of the LPRT who will work closely with the consultant to spearhead the PFMP review process.

The LPRT held their first meeting in Nanyuki, and took up the review of PFMP together with the consultant on January 17, 2021. The PFMP process is funded by Laikipia Conservancies Association (LCA).
