Background
The Food and Agriculture organization of the United Nations is implementing a global environmental facility (GEF) funded project on Restoration of Arid and semi-Arid lands of Kenya through Bio-Enterprise Development and other incentives (TRI) in Laikipia ,Isiolo and Marsabit counties .
The overall objective of the project is to restore deforested and degraded lands through the forest, landscape restoration (FLR) approach, and enhance the socio-economic development of local communities through development of bio-enterprises of Non-Timber forest products and services (NFTPS) in ASALS. Where LWF is one of the implementing partners and works closely in collaboration with other organizations like ILMAMUSI CFA, KFS, KEFRI, NEMA, County government of Laikipia and other CBOs.
Expected outputs and Specific objectives
- Support forest and landscape restoration 82 ha through invasive species opuntia stricta removal and reseeding in Maiyanat community land and establishment of soil conservation and rangeland restoration intervention focused on micro catchments in Maiyanat ,Lekurruki and shulumai community lands.
- Support IINgwesi Hay group in their efforts to restore land and generate income. This includes land protection ,preparation ,purchase of seedling and planting, capacity building of the group on marketing and financial management which will have 60ha of IINgwesi community land planted with Hay for livestock feed and the Hay farm boundaries fenced/protected.
- Support the production of communication materials to disseminate knowledge and results from project activities, under implementation and documentation through reports, pictures, videos and share through relevant digital platforms, stories on the process and impact of planting hay for livestock and indigenous trees.
- Support water Management improvement systems (WRUAs) in II Ngwesi community lands in collaboration with Borana conservancy
- To have selected specific components of Dupoto Bussiness plan operationalized and Market linkages created, train Dupoto members on hive management, support 3 marketing exhibitions ,supporting 50 new membership drive ,support Board meeting and AGM and support audit for Dupoto and support with 500,000 revolving funds established.
- Environmental conservation forum held in Borana conservancy with 6 schools as preliminary events to a two -phase debate session where the winner will be awarded to promote environmental conservation education culture among the youths.
