Savage Wilderness coined the idea of an outdoor education program in September 2021 as a way to take kids out of their comfort zones and away from the many distractions in the modern world.
This program aims to teach participants skills such as organizing skills, planning, packing, map reading, navigation among others.
Alex, the program lead has worked in outdoor leadership for 12 years. He has worked for various organizations in America. Most notably, the National Outdoor Leadership School in Boulder Colorado.
Rather than just guiding kids on trips around Kenya, we now hope to educate them on surviving in the wilderness as well as respecting the natural environment. The program which can be done as one program but can also be done in phases.
During the program, kids are able to learn through trying. The program provides a safe environment for kids to make mistakes and learn from them.
At the Sagana Camp, kids can learn about self-support trips, map reading and navigation. The first main hiking experience is a climb up the elephant hill on the Aberdares. The Program culminates with a trip up Mt Kenya- organized and led by the children.
At the moment we have partnered with the Pembroke House School and the German School. We facilitate most private school trips to Sagana.
If you are interested in signing up to the program, get in touch with your school and mention you want to enroll kids into the outdoor education program. We are trying to get more schools to sign up.
