The secret to securing stability within the greater Laikipia landscape and at the same time promoting the environmental management has strong and sustainable partnerships written all over it.
Stakeholders working in the conservancy space within Laikipia continue to embrace the fact that a clear and collaborative approach towards conservation efforts is the key to conservation sustainability.
Conservancies have worked together to support controlled grazing access by pastoralist neighbors within the landscape, joining hands to contribute to and promote local social services through corporate social responsibility programs, and have helped to the create employment for local community members, raise revenues through taxation, and they procure local goods and services.
But is it enough? Have our conservancies become the economic drivers that were touted in an earlier study hosted by the Laikipia (Wildlife) Forum assisted study from 2013, entitled, “The Rural Economy of Laikipia as the Basis for a Model County.” Two County government administrations have not found value in the report and its promotion of conservation as an economic and rural land management tool.
