Community leaders from four community lands surrounding Mukogodo in Laikipia North have selected to rehabilitate 6 water projects within their areas. The community lands include Chulu Mai (formerly) Kurikuri, Lekuruki, Maiyanat (formerly Makurian), and Il Ngwesi will obtain the support for these rehabilitation projects through Laikipia Wildlife Forum and MKEWP, through the financial support of Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) under the Restoration Initiative Project.
The rehabilitation of these water points will benefit the community by improving water access for people, livestock and wildlife in the area. The implementation of this exercise will be spearheaded by the Mount Kenya Ewaso Water Partnership (MKEWP) and ILMAMUSI Community Forest Association.
The selection process has been straightforward. Each community was oriented to the potential for Project support. Local water committees participated in the identification and prioritization of water project needs, and those projects that fit within the FAO budget were selected for rehabilitation. An umbrella water committee supported by ILMAMUSI CFA selected the final projects for financial support.
The ILMAMUSI Water Committee unanimously agreed for the rehabilitation of Bokish and Kopio water points in Chulu Mai, the Arjiju and Kiwanja Ndege water points in Maiyanat, Loolera water point and the Naimaralal borehole in Lekuruki, and the Olgiriai water intake in Il Ngwesi respectively.
The rehabilitation of these water points are expected to be completed end by May 2022 and as such will begin once all approvals and licenses are obtained.
The MKEWP water coordinator, Mr. Stanley Kirimi, lauded the communities for accepting and committing to contribute 10% of the total budget allocated for the different projects in the form of materials and labor needed to help in the rehabilitation process.
Wilfred Mejoli, ILMAMUSI Community Forest Association, Chairman of the Board, and a member of the Maiyanat community land, took the opportunity to appreciate and acknowledge the continuous efforts being made by Laikipia Forum, FAO , IL MAMUSI CFA and other like-minded partners who have joined hands to see to it that the livelihoods of the Mukogodo residents are improved. He appreciated the engagement of the communities in all levels of project identification, selection and prioritization.
