The Laikipia Forum held a two-day training on the 29th and 30th of April at the Ilmamusi CFA Headquarters. The session was for the Loragai Community Water Project Management Committee on operations and maintenance of the Loragai Spring water project.
The two-day training helped focus the Committee’s attention on general project management, operations and maintenance practices, and the development of an operations and maintenance schedule and budgeting.
A trainer’s manual used by the GOK for community-based water supply projects guided the delivery of the training.
Some of the emerging issues from the training include:
- The need to strengthen governance structures within the Committee for the project.
- The need to create awareness among the water users on the rules and regulations guiding the operations of the project – including water access and water fees.
- The need to enhance partnerships with local conservation and water stakeholders for sustainability.
As a sign of commitment to safeguarding the project, the Spring Management Committee elected new leadership that is tasked with spearheading this initiative and ensuring its success.
The Il Ngwesi Conservancy Board and the Ilmamusi CFA committed to working closely with the Water Committee to ensure project sustainability.
This water project is part of the WCS/Disney support to the reduction of human-elephant conflict in the greater Mukogodo landscape. More than 25% of elephant mortalities in the Laikipia-Samburu landscape can be attributed to HEC.
This project decreases the opportunities for human and elephants to draw water from the same place and helps to ensure a regular supply of water that support wildlife, livelihoods and livestock.
