Mount Kenya Ewaso Water Partnership supported the design and studies of a common water intake in Mutara to address water shortages and poor distribution. Their efforts have finally paid off. The rigorous process of getting everybody on board to this idea involved a lot of stakeholder engagement, right from the community level to the national level.

With the support of the Darwin Initiative and partnerships with Fauna and Flora International, as well as Ol Pejeta Conservancy, MKEWP was able to engage Mutara WRUA and the community members through the Laikipia Water, Cattle and Wildlife Project.
The Project’s key outcome was to secure the 8000ha of Mutara Ranch as a dispersal area for wildlife with grazing and water resources managed for the adjacent communities. This project was designed to reduce resource conflict across the wider western Laikipia landscape.
