The Mount Kenya Ewaso Water Partnership (MKEWP) is on a two-week training exercise of seven Water Resources Users Associations, selected to pilot the WID project . The series of trainings that began last week at Naro Moru WRUA have so far been held at Likii, Ngare Ndare and Teleswani WRUAs, with Ngare Nyting, Isiolo and Ngusishi WRUAs set to follow.
The WID Project is documenting the value of WRUA service delivery to WRUA members, the Water Resources Authority, and County governments. The Project demonstrates a practical way to support WRUA financial operations and to professionalize WRUA service delivery and sustainability.
The Project will strengthen the institutional and financial capacity of WRUAs with sustainable water resource management at the subcatchment level. The Project pilots the tools and methodology with these WRUAs to realize a process that will lead to the development of WRUA Operations and Revenue Plans. From the trainings held so far, it is clear that WRUAs are doing great work within the subcatchments but lack the financial capacity to execute their scope of work effectively.
MKWEP is joined by a team from the Centre for Training and integrated Research in ASAL Development (CETRAD) to facilitate the fundamentals of Integrated Water Resources Management. Rural Focus Limited have also joined the WRUAs trainings and will work with them to conduct abstraction and pollutions surveys.
The implementation of this project is led by a 6-member team from: CETRAD, the Chair of the WRUA Forum; Naro Moru and Ngusishi WRUAs; Tambuzi Farm Ltd.; and Laikipia, Meru and Nyeri Counties. MKEWP serves as the secretariat.
