Likii sub-catchment continues to lose vegetation cover at an alarming rate through human activities such as charcoal burning and cutting down of trees within the riparian area to pave way for cultivation. The impacts of these human activities include severe soil erosion and degradation of the water quality .
To address this situation, various intervention measures both short term and long term, have been established by Likii River Water Users Association. One of the most effective strategies being the continued partnership with key institutions such as Ewaso Ngiro North Development Authority (ENNDA) in the restoration of degraded catchment and riparian area through targeted tree planting.
The rehabilitation of riparian zones and catchment areas through massive tree planting to ensure a thick forest cover will play a key role towards improving the water quantity and quality. Who benefits upstream and down? We do, as well as our livestock and agriculture production.
The tree planting activities have also contributed to the national government’s efforts of achieving and maintaining a tree cover of at least ten percent (10%) in line with the vision 2030.
Environmental conservation is the care and management of a resource so that the resource maintains its ability to fulfil its functions and provide goods and services for present and future generations.
Likii River Water Users Association has collaborated and partnered with ENNDA and community members in the promotion and implementation of projects with the greatest potential for advancing accountability, and good governance within the Likii catchment. We are united in our efforts to cultivate and build a constituency for improved livelihood, biodiversity and natural resources conservation.
This partnership is aimed at rehabilitating the most degraded areas along the Likii River through planting of water friendly trees. The Association continues to seek more partners who shares in their vision of the protection and restoration of the catchment. We are also in talks most recently with Equity Bank, who are also working on projects geared towards climate action.
